Regency of Rokan Hilir

Situation of Nature
Regency of Rokan Hilir lays in coastal area of East Sumatra 2’30’ Paralel North, 10’52’ Longitude East.

Regency of Rokan Hilir has regional boundaries as follows :
a. northside with Malacca strait
b. eastside with Dumai city
c. southside with Regency of Rokan Hulu, and Regency of Bengkalis; and
d. westside with Regency of Labuhan Batu of Province of North Sumatra.

Regency of Rokan Hilir has entirety region is about 8.881,59 km2, with its capital city domicile in Ujung Tanjung, covering 11 districts, those are district of Kubu, Bangko, Tanah Putih, Rimba Melintang, Bagan Sinembah, Sinaboi, Tanah Putih Tanjung Melawan, Pujud, Bangko Pusako, Simpang Kanan and Pasir Lima Kapas.

Climate
Regency of Rokan Hilir has tropical climate with rainfall of about 1.500 mm/year, with air temperature between 24’ – 32’ C.

Travel Destination in Rokan Hilir

Burn Lighter
Combustion of Tongkang (Lighter) or it is also called Go Ge Cap Lak is done every date of 15 or 16, fifth month of Chinese Calendar. It is a kind of ceremony which conducted Tionghoa (chinese) society to thank to God Ki Ong Ya and Taisun Ong Ya, trusted by them for giving safety to Tionghoa society in Bagansiapiapi. This ceremony also represent a symbol their intention to make the area they have found as their new fatherland. Carrying out of the ceremony is a typical of this society in Bagansiapiapi as a tradition since 1820, precisely it has almost done since two centuries ago. The center of sequence of these events is conducted in In Hock Kiong temple and Lighter is burned in front of Yan Sing Tua temple on Perniagaan Street, Bagansiapiapi. The ceremony is started by conducting of parade of Combustion Procession of Lighter or boat made of papers and decorated beautifully by some statues of Taisun Ong Ya which also made of papers. There are also burned thousands of bar of Hio in many sizes both giant or medium sizes. All participants of the ceremony of burn lighter are not only come from Bagansiapiapi but also from other towns, either from our country or from abroad. This event is alternated with some entertainments like Barongsai and other perfomances of traditional arts of the society.

Fisherman villages
Geographically Regency of Rokan Hilir is located on territorial water of the wide sea which is very potential fishery area. Until the period of World War II, the fish production of Regency of Rokan Hilir, specially Bagansiapiapi, known as the second biggest in the world, after Peru. Although the catching central over territorial water of Malacca strait has been much decreased, here we can still see all of the fisherman activities.

Jemur Island
Jemur island is also called Arwah islands which consist of 9 islands. The islands are Tokong Emas island, Labuhan Bilik island, Batu Adang island, Pertandang island, Tokong Simbang island, Batu Mandi island, Batu Belayar island, and Jemur island. Tokong Emas island and Labuhan Bilik island are the biggest one which have many beautiful sceneries. These islands have many hills which form a circle. Many fishermen come to this island to catch fishes because this island has abundant of marine products such as fish, rajungan, prawn and many others else. On the other hand, this islands is inhabited by turtles, where in certain season, the turtles go up to the coast to lay eggs in the sand. This island is very interesing to be visited especially for maritime tour because it has beautiful nature with its sandy beach where tourists can go sunbathing to enjoy tropical sunshine and soft breezing wind or go diving in the clear water. Jemur island is located about 40 mile from Bagansiapiapi or about 37 mile of Port Klang Malaysia.

Lake Napangga
Lake Napangga is located about 70 km from Ujung Tanjung, District of Tanah Putih near the upstream of Batang Kumuh river, in Tanjung Medan village in the limits of Regency of Rokan Hulu and North Sumatra Province. It has width of about 500 hectares. This lake has very beautiful natural sceneries and its calm water lake make us enthusiast to swim and to fish. It also its own characteristic, because according to the legend, the lake were sojourn place of the King in the past and in this lake there are fish of arwana.

Semah
Semah is a kind af tradition of Malay society exist in Rokan Hilir that has been conducted by generations. This ritual is a coalition with mystical nature led by a bomoh or soothsayer. By conducting the ritual, the spirits who live in certain place will not disturb human activities who live in the area any longger. Semah which is generally conducted by society who live in coastal area of Rokan Hilir is called Semah Kampung (semah for village) and Semah Laut (semah for the sea). Another kind of semah is Semah Ladang (semah for farm), a tradition which conducted to open paddy farm. This event is also filled with dikir and pray to refuse disaster, that is a request for safety and luck to the supreme God.
